APhA-ASP Heartburn Awareness Challenge

Student Pharmacists Make A Difference By Educating Consumers About Heartburn

Each year, student pharmacists across America join together to educate their communities about heartburn through the Heartburn Awareness Challenge, sponsored by P&G in partnership with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The Challenge involves a contest among the APhA-ASP student chapters at participating pharmacy schools to provide public education on heartburn through the use of the NHBA patient education tools. In addition, students are asked to provide individual patient sessions (e.g. exhibits at Health Fairs, etc), using a the NHBA’s Heartburn Screener tool to help individuals determine if a patient has episodic or frequent heartburn and provide a nonprescription treatment recommendation or referral if appropriate. Student chapter programs are then evaluated based on total number of patients educated, creativity and media coverage. The top chapter from each geographic region and an overall national winner are recognized each year at APhA's annual meeting.
