Prevacid 24HR
The FDA has approved an Rx-to-OTC switch of the proton pump inhibitor lansoprazole. The 15-mg, delayed-release capsules will be marketed as Prevacid 24HR by Novartis and are expected to be available later in 2009.

Today Vaginal Contraceptive Sponge
The Today Vaginal Contraceptive Sponge—a soft polyurethane sponge that releases the spermicide nonoxynol 9 continuously for 24 hours—has returned to the market for the third time. Mayer Laboratories acquired the Today Sponge after the previous manufacturer went bankrupt; the product was relaunched in May 2009.

Besivance (besifloxacin ophthalmic suspension 0.6%) is a new prescription fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye). In clinical trials, the topical drops were shown to be effective in treating patients 1 year of age and older. Besivance will be marketed by Bausch & Lomb.
