New GERD Treatment Guidelines from American College of Gastroenterology

April 17th, 2013

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) has released new treatment guidelines on the diagnosis and management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The guidelines provide an overview of GERD and its clinical presentation and offer recommendations for medical, surgical, and endoscopic management, including comparative effectiveness of different treatments. Information about extraesophageal symptoms and complications and the evaluation and management of “refractory” GERD is included. The guidelines conclude with a review of the potential risks and side effects of the main treatments for GERD and their implications for patient management.

“Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease” can be viewed and downloaded at www.gi.org/guideline/diagnosis-and-managemen-of-gastroesophageal-reflux-.... The guidelines also were published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology. (Am J Gastroenterol. 2013;108:308–328.)
